Why Toilets Need to Be Reimagined—Now

Modern sanitation systems are colliding with reality.
Toilets designed for a world of cheap water, stable climate, and slow-growing cities are now being pushed beyond their limits. Cities flush drinking water during droughts. Storms overwhelm sewers and spill untreated waste into rivers. Rapid urban growth outpaces the infrastructure meant to contain it.

The question is no longer whether toilets work. It is whether the dominant sanitation system still makes sense.

Sanitation has been one of humanity’s greatest public-health achievements. By separating people from their waste, sanitation reduced disease, enabled dense cities, and supported economic growth. Where it works well, it becomes invisible.

But globally, sanitation remains uneven and increasingly fragile. Nearly 3.5 billion people still lack safely managed sanitation. In low- and middle-income countries, this fuels disease and disrupts education and productivity. In high-income countries, sanitation systems consume enormous amounts of clean water and depend on infrastructure built decades ago.

The flush-and-sewer system was built on assumptions that once held true:

Clean water is abundant and cheap
Climate patterns are predictable
Cities grow slowly enough for infrastructure to keep up
Centralized systems are easier to manage

Those assumptions are now breaking.

Climate change intensifies floods and droughts. Rapid urbanization—especially in informal settlements—outpaces sewer construction. Aging infrastructure becomes harder and more expensive to maintain. What was once a robust solution is becoming a fragile one.

Redesign has been slow because sanitation systems are deeply embedded. Pipes, treatment plants, regulations, and habits create technological and institutional lock-in. Once billions are invested underground, change becomes politically and financially risky. Cultural discomfort around human waste further discourages experimentation.

Rethinking Sanitation as a System

In response, engineers and researchers are challenging the idea that sanitation must always be centralized, water-intensive, and invisible. Instead of treating the toilet as a passive endpoint, sanitation is increasingly being redesigned as a system that begins at the toilet itself.

Long-term global research initiatives, such as the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge, have supported toilets that operate without sewer connections, with minimal water, and with built-in treatment.

These systems work differently:

On-site and building-scale treatment systems process waste where it is generated, reducing reliance on long sewer networks. Treated water can be reused for flushing or other non-potable purposes.
Water-efficient and near-waterless toilets decouple sanitation from water abundance, making toilets viable in drought-prone regions.
Waste-stream separation technologies, such as urine-diverting toilets, simplify treatment and allow nutrients to be recovered instead of diluted.
Thermal and combustion-based systems use heat to destroy pathogens and reduce waste volume, leaving byproducts that can be safely handled without complex infrastructure.

Together, these approaches reject the idea of one universal sanitation model. They treat sanitation as modular, adaptable, and context-specific.

Why the Problem Isn’t Solved Yet

Despite technical success, adoption remains limited.

Advanced sanitation systems are often expensive. Utilities and governments are slow to adopt unfamiliar technologies without clear mandates. Sanitation is tightly regulated, long-lived, and politically sensitive.

Some strategies therefore focus on early adoption in high-income settings—such as replacing failing septic systems—to scale production and reduce costs over time. This frames sanitation not just as an engineering challenge, but as a market and governance problem.

Climate change further complicates matters. Floods, droughts, and energy constraints make resilience more important than uniformity. Increasingly, experts argue that the future lies in sanitation diversity—a mix of centralized, decentralized, and on-site systems tailored to local conditions.

Sanitation remains unfinished not because solutions don’t exist, but because deciding which systems belong where, who pays for them, and how they scale is still unresolved.

Toilets need to be reimagined—not because they failed, but because the world they were built for no longer exists.
