This global trend, called shrinkflation, blends economics, design, and psychology, and it changes how we shop without us even noticing.

The Disappearing Crunch

Open a bag of your favorite chips today and you might finish it faster than before. It is not your appetite that changed, it is the pack that holds less. Across the world, products are quietly shrinking while prices stay the same. Economists call this practice shrinkflation.

In the UK, more than 2,500 grocery items were found to have reduced in size between 2012 and 2017. In the United States, Doritos bags lost around five chips, Skippy peanut-butter jars developed deeper indents to disguise less content, and Cadbury Creme Eggs became about ten percent lighter. Even toilet paper is affected. Walmart’s Ultra-Strong rolls dropped 48 sheets but stayed at the same price.

Shrinkflation does not stop at snacks. Airlines have cut legroom, hotels have quietly removed free breakfasts, and streaming platforms like Netflix now offer smaller libraries for the same subscription fee. In short, you are paying the same amount for less of almost everything.

The Hidden Math Behind the Vanishing Value

Shrinkflation works quietly through numbers that most shoppers never calculate. Imagine a 200-gram bag of chips that costs $4.00. The manufacturer decides to make it 180 grams but keeps the price the same. The price per 100 grams rises from $2.00 to $2.22, which is an 11 percent hidden increase. Multiply that by ten million bags and the company makes an extra $2.2 million while customers barely notice.

People are much more sensitive to visible price increases than to small size reductions. For a business, it is safer to take away a few grams than to raise the sticker price.

In recent years, as costs of raw materials, energy, and transport rose, companies used shrinkflation to protect profits. But even after costs eased, many products never returned to their old sizes. What began as a defensive tactic quietly became a long-term strategy.

Between 2020 and 2024, consumer prices rose by about 21 percent, but corporate profits increased by nearly 90 percent. Many firms used the wave of inflation as cover to push their margins higher, a trend often called greedflation.

The Psychology of Disguise

If shrinkflation is a trick, then packaging is the magician’s wand. Humans rely on what they see and feel rather than what they read on the label.

The Design Playbook:

Add more air but keep the bag size. Puffy chip packets look full even when they are not.
Use curved bottles that appear taller but hold less.
Widen the lid or use thicker plastic to make a lighter pack feel premium.
Distract with “new look” or “improved recipe” labels.

Consumer experiments have shown that shoppers overestimate contents by up to 20 percent when packaging has curved shapes or bright designs. In another test, when a smaller candy bar was labeled “New Shape,” most buyers assumed it was larger.

Beyond food, digital platforms remove features while advertising “simpler plans,” airlines promote “lightweight design,” and phone brands ship fewer accessories under “eco packaging.” Shrinkflation has become design storytelling that sells reduction as refinement.

The Fightback and the Future

Awareness is slowly turning into action. In 2023, France became the first country to require supermarkets to label shrinkflated products for two months after size changes. The sticker is bright yellow and reads: “This product has decreased in quantity.” Japan and South Korea are drafting similar transparency rules. In the United States, the Shrinkflation Prevention Act aims to hold companies accountable for deceptive packaging. Even President Biden addressed it publicly, saying, “They think we won’t notice. Give me a break.”

Consumers are also fighting back. Online communities on Reddit and TikTok share “before and after” comparisons, weighing products and exposing subtle changes. When Toblerone widened the gaps between its chocolate triangles in 2016, the backlash was so intense that the company reversed the design in 2018.

Some retailers are responding by turning honesty into a marketing point. Labels that read “Same Price, Same Size” are appearing in supermarkets as signs of trust.
