Long before CGI, mathematicians explored the hidden order in nature’s chaos. In 1975, Benoît Mandelbrot studied mountains, trees, and clouds and found they repeated their shape at smaller scales. He called these patterns fractals, from fractus, meaning “broken.”

One of the simplest fractals is the Sierpinski triangle, described by Wacław Sierpiński in 1915. Draw a triangle, mark the midpoints of its sides, remove the central one, and repeat forever. Each layer mirrors the one before — a property called self-similarity.

Fractals can even be expressed with equations. The famous Mandelbrot set follows:

Why Fractals Work Better Than Dots

Early motion-capture suits used dots to record movement, but they had a problem: dots change size with distance and light. When cameras moved, their readings shifted — breaking the illusion of smooth motion.

Engineers at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) found a solution in fractal geometry. They printed Sierpinski-like triangular grids on suits. Because these patterns repeat at multiple scales, cameras can recognize them even when actors move, rotate, or blur. If one triangle disappears from view, a smaller one still fits the same mathematical pattern. The fractal suit allowed computers to track motion across changing lenses, distances, and lighting — giving animators stable data for digital skeletons and realistic expressions.

Programs like Houdini and Terragen use simple recursive rules to generate natural-looking forms. Artists don’t draw every detail—they define the math, and the computer repeats it, creating patterns that feel alive because they follow nature’s logic.

This same idea powers procedural generation—the technique behind vast digital worlds in films and games. Forests, storms, and galaxies grow from equations that repeat with slight variations, producing believable complexity from simple math.
