Meaning & Tattoos

For most of tattoo history tattoos were serious. Not just in how they were made (with years of training and skilled hands), but in what they represented:

People inked symbols that meant something: love, grief, honor, identity. Designs were carefully chosen. Every tattoo had a story. A journal of sorts.
Something important enough to carry forever.
The aesthetic matched that seriousness too: clean lines, balanced compositions, bold shading.

Now?

In recent years, a "meaningfully meaningless" tattoo style has exploded.

People are getting tattoos that look like they were drawn during math class—by a bored kid. A pizza slice with legs. A badly drawn dog saying “wow.” A stick man falling down stairs.

This aesthetic is dubbed the Ignorant Style, Lo-Fi Black Ink, or sometimes just “bad-on-purpose” tattoos.

And they don’t mean anything.
At least, not in the traditional way.

Meaninglessness as a Message

Unlike traditional tattoos, ignorant tattoos often go out of their way to reject meaning. They look messy. Random. Even “ugly.” But that’s the point.

They challenge the idea that something permanent has to be serious or beautiful.

Some call this aesthetic absurd. And they’re right.
It’s absurd on purpose.

Art: A Mirror Of Society

Rewind: The early 20th century was a wrecking ball: two world wars, global pandemics, and economic crashes shattered faith in politics, religion, and “rational” progress. When the supposedly stable pillars of society crumbled, artists concluded that making tidy, logical art would be a lie. Life, and art, felt meaningless. Absurd.

As a response to the chaos, artists started the ‘Absurd’ movement. They used ugliness, randomness, and humor to mirror a world that felt broken. Dadaists cut up newspapers into nonsense poems; Surrealists painted dream mash-ups of lobsters and telephones; playwrights filled stages with characters who babbled in circles.

Technique wasn’t tossed aside—order itself was.

They broke down ‘conventions’ i.e. what one was expected to do to seem cohesive.

Fast-Forward: Fast-scroll newsfeeds, climate dread, economic whiplash—institutions we once trusted now look shaky, and meaning shifts by the hour.

The same disorientation youth faced a century ago, is seen today: if nothing stays certain, why pretend otherwise?

Translation Into Tattoo Art

Enter “ignorant” or “lo-fi” ink: They borrow the Absurdist playbook—reject polish, embrace nonsense—to say: permanence doesn’t require profundity; in a chaotic world, silliness is honest.

These tattoos are intentionally badly drawn. They borrow from graffiti, notebook doodles, meme culture, and inside jokes.

The body is turned into a living, laughing protest against the expectation that everything meaningful must look perfect. Because life isn’t perfect.
